Azuki Facial Scrub

Back to March 2008 Newsletter

Azuki Bean Powder has been used by Japanese women for over 1,200 years and remains popular today. This delicate yet effective scrub deep cleans the pores limiting blackheads, pimples and other blemishes. It will sough off dead skin particles and gently exfoliate without damaging the gentle surface of the skin. It leaves your skin feeling extra clean, refined, soft and polished. The affluent women of ancient Japan were said to have a healthy, pink glow to their skin. They attributed this to the lacquer-red hue of azuki.

Instructions for Homemade Azuki Scrub:

  1. You must remove the extra moisture before you grind the azuki beans. Therefore, in a cast-iron skillet, briefly roast 1/2 Hokkaido Azuki Beans on medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes, stir constantly. Do not allow azuki beans to become dull and lose their red color.
  2. Allow beans to cool, then using a grain mill or coffee grinder (clean throughly), grind the beans into a very soft and fine powder.
  3. Store in a jar, away from moisture.
  • To Use: Steam face with hot water and a washcloth. Once face is damp, mix a little azuki powder with hot water to form a paste, then apply powder to your damp face and rub in circular motion several times, massaging softly into the skin.
  • Wash off azuki with warm water. Splash face with cold water to close pores.
  • Feel the softness!
Note: I purchased a coffee grinder that I use just for making my home beauty recipes. You may want to do the same as this will prevent coffee oils mixing with your ingredients and is more convenient. Try and get a grinder with a top speed for better grinding and powder formation. Note that we sell coffee grinders at Simply Natural.
