About
Kristina Turner
I first found joy in the kitchen over 20 years ago, while inventing
vegetarian feasts for 200 at the Findhorn Community in Scotland. Fascinated with
the connection between food and mood, nourishment and self-esteem, I returned to
the USA to study macrobiotics, shiatsu and psychology.
During the seven
years I was writing this cookbook I taught cooking and self-healing classes, in
Grass Valley, California. I was inspired by two of my favorite dog-eared how-to
books: Dr. Susan Lark's PMS Self-Help Book and Jon Jeavon's book How to Grow
More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible in Your Own Backyard. Both these
books have an abundance of illustrations and information, easy-to-understand
summarizing charts, and are thoroughly cross-referenced. With compassion for the
beginner, they make the complex and overwhelming seem simple. That was my goal!
Typing the entire
book on my typewriter, and singing while I illustrated, I wanted every page to
light up somebody's heart. Chapter-by-chapter, I handed it out in class and
revised it with feedback from hundreds of students. I decided to self-publish
when they enthusiastically besieged me with requests for copies to send to their
mom, aunt, friend, daughter, son and cousin! Zip! I can hardly believe that was
15 years ago. Now, I am amazed that wherever I go, I run across people who tell
me they have read my book, and been cooking from it for years. I am so grateful
to be part of the growing wave of organic farmers and natural food cooks who are
nurturing life for the generations to come.
